at a public hearing on the issue in Augusta, Maine Senator Dennis Damon (D-Obviously) announced his sponsorship of a bill that would allow same-sex marriage in the state and was greeted with a standing ovation. Damon said that the time for his bill has come. He says his bill “recognizes the worth of every man and woman among us.”
fuckin’ a. go Maine!!
note: at this point, GLAD (Gay and Lesbian Advocates & Defenders) are halfway to their goal of Six by Twelve (getting same-sex marriage legalized in the six New England states by 2012–Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont so far.) come ooooooooon, Maine!

I understand that most people think marriage is about recognizing someone’s love and commitment for another person, but society has made it so much more than that. Being married can bring financial relief when buying a house or getting a loan, and it can determine whether your partner can receive health care. I think its a disgrace to deny gay people the right to take advantage of these opportunities. I have a hard time seeing myself getting married because I don’t want to be associated with an institution that discriminates so harshly. GO MAINE.
