i finally bought the movie West Side Story, and i watched it when i got home. it was hilarious because i remember thinking how dated the costuming looked when i saw it in sixth grade (super baggy pants and shirts were what the cool kids wore at the time.) now when i watched the movie, the guys in the Sharks and the Jets looked like any hipster employee at your local American Apparel store: tight pants (usually of a colored fabric–khaki, gray, blue, etc.), block-colored shirts, chucks or Keds, deep v-necks layered under a collared shirt and/or a windbreaker. only instead of singing musical songs, those people are listening to Crystal Castles or a Steve Aoki mix. and instead of pique turns and high-energy exchanges, they skulk around and ignore people.
seeing all those violent, troubled youths dancing gave me two funny visuals.
- hipsters dancing exuberantly, leaping into the air, kicking and spinning (as opposed to twitching and jerking awkwardly on the dance floor to electronic music, evoking the same feeling one gets watching Elaine in that Seinfeld episode.)
- dancing and singing taking the place of many everyday social interactions. it would be awesome if that was what you saw any time you left your house to go anywhere: doctors in surgery, garbage men, football teams squaring off, old people eating breakfast at 6:30 a.m., etc. (if it’s easier to visualize, think break-dancing battles being expanded to the entire culture.) it. would. be. awesome.
