yeah, if you haven’t heard, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) announced today that in 2010 he intends to officially switch parties from Republican to Democrat. he says that the national Republican Party has moved too far to the right and destroyed any form of moderation that was found in the party.
you know what this means, right?? he’s aligned himself politically with the Democrats and will give them the filibuster-proof majority (though probably only theoretically) if Norm Coleman (R & Sore Loser – MN) ever gives up the ghost in his lost re-election bid from NOVEMBER. but, in reality, Specter isn’t terribly progressive, but he’s a bloody “ghey-loving” liberal compared to the wingnut Republicans helming the party at the moment. once teh gheys have marriage legalized, they’ll take over Amurrikan society and then the world! …
Specter said in his presser today that “I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.” (although he still says he will vote against the EFCA–Employee Free Choice Act–we’ll see how he does in Pennsylvania with that on his record.) he also cited the fact that, after reviewing the political landscape in his state, that he has
“found that the prospects for winning the republican primary are bleak. i am not prepared to have my 29-year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate.”
so, putting it all together, Specter’s ideology has stayed more or less the same throughout his tenure in the Senate, but the party has shifted so far to the right that he believes strongly enough (with good reason) that he will not be re-elected by the people who originally put him there because they no longer subscribe to the beliefs they held when he was elected. (they are now issues voters, basing their support on abortion, stem-cell research, taxes, and other such conservative nonsense.)
the march to Specter’s conclusion seems to have serious logical flaws, but i see a bigger one on the other side of that situation: if a guy rated a 33.33 out of 100 on the progressive scale on party-line votes, his chances of getting elected by the Democratic party are about the same as Ann Coulter actually ever having an orgasm (read: impossible.) i hope the Pennsylvania Democratic party doesn’t fall for this weak-ass political foreplay.
