Yesterday I presented at my doctor’s office for my last Gardasil shot. I’m pleased as punch to have no more shots (it’s a series of 3), but I’m even happier to have been vaccinated against four types of HPV, a virus that is the leading cause of cervical cancer. Since it was approved by the FDA on June 8, 2006, there has been a continuous “moral battle” in the U.S. regarding the jab’s distribution. I’m so sick of conservatism in America right now. If conservatives are so concerned with Small Government, then why are they so goddamn interested in regulating my body in regards to sex and health care? More after the jump.
Conservatives have attacked Gardasil as a STD vaccine. The argument is that HPV is preventable if one just doesn’t have sex! Right, the same old bullshit. The vaccine is recommended for females ages 9-26. Conservatives are upset that advocates of the vaccine are pushing for mandatory vaccinations of all women. You know, if this was a testicular cancer vaccine, which caused cancer inherited by a sexually transmitted infection, you better believe school boys from coast to coast would be immediately herded into the cafeteria to get their jabs. But it’s not, it’s about controlling female sexuality and putting our bodies at risk.
In 2007, Texas Governor, Rick Perry, mandated the vaccination of all schoolgirls with Gardasil [Feministe]. Not only is this Texas we’re talkin’ bout ya’ll, but Perry is a staunch christian conservative who opposes abortion and stem cell research. He gets it like the other right wingnuts do not. If Abstinence Only was realistic, we wouldn’t HAVE Sexually Transmitted Infections in the first place. But we DO. And even if every woman made the conscious decision to stop fucking (what would be the purpose of living, I ask you?), well, we still live in a Rape Culture. So when these conservative dillholes start advocating for rape prevention in the MALE community, maybe then we can talk to Merck about scaling back their advertising.
So congrats to me for getting my jabbie (.m. has hers too!)! Protect your daughters, and get them theirs. Tell your friends, sisters, girlfriends, fuck buddies, and strangers on the street!
